A short interactive story set aboard the SS Mendi.

Historical Context: The South African Native Labour Corps and the SS Mendi

  • As well as soldiers, many labourers were involved in World War One. They helped provide the allied armies with supplies, built roads and railways, cared for animals, repaired vehicles, dug trenches and much more.
  • Some of these labourers were recruited from South Africa, forming the SANLC.
  • The SANLC was predominantly made up of black labourers. The South African government stipulated that they had to be segregated from other white labourers, soldiers and citizens. This segregation did not always occur, and eventually the SANLC was disbanded.
  • On the night of 21 February 1917, more than 600 men of the SANLC lost their lives in the sinking of the SS Mendi.
  • The Mendi was carrying men from the SANLC to France, when the SS Darro, a much larger mail ship crashed into it.
